Preview of Neil Gaiman’s “The Eternals”

with 3 comments

Newsarama has an eight-page preview of the first issue of Neil Gaiman’s The Eternals miniseries which starts up in a couple of weeks. I’ve never had any interest in these characters before (or, honestly, in any of Jack Kirby’s late-career creations), but damn if this preview doesn’t get me wanting to read it, what with its compelling opening setup and some spectacular artwork by John Romita Jr.

Not that, y’know, I needed any incentive to get me reading a Gaiman series.

Anyway, I know there’s a number of people reading this who are Gaiman fans but who aren’t necessarily familiar with Gaiman’s comics work or who might not realize he had a new series coming out, so consider this post something of a public service announcement for you guys. If you want some backstory on these characters (though, honestly, I sincerely doubt you’ll need it), the Wikipedia has all you need to know.

The first issue of The Eternals comes out on June 21.

  1. Wow.

That knocked me right on my ass. I’m beginning to see a pattern in what Gaiman likes to write about, and the pretty pictures… JRJR was put on Earth to draw stuff exactly like this.

I never got into the Eternals at all, except during the old crossover in the Thor title years ago. Speaking of, I wonder how much of The Eternals springs from Gaiman’s pitch for a revamped Thor title.

  2. [...] So in this space today, you were supposed to get a review of the first issue of Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr.’s new Eternals miniseries. I wanted to help persuade all of my Gaiman-loving but not necessarily comics-reading friends to find their way to a comics shop to pick the book up. (Assuming that the book’s good enough to recommend… oh, who am I fooling? It’s Gaiman.) [...]

  3. After reading Eternals #1 last night, having started it earlier in the day and feeling slightly impatient with its meandering beginning, I can only say…Wow! I’m definitely along for the ride. Loved the story, art, and coloring; you can feel the Kirby-love exuding from every panel, and that’s a good thing. I think I’m gonna like this better than 1602, to be honest, but that would be a bit premature… This is going on the pull list, along with Justice, Creeper, and the new Atom.
